Library & Information Centre

The 'Library and Information centre' in the J.S.S Medical College was established in the year 1984-85 with a sole purpose to quench the thirst of knowledge and to fulfill the concerned needs of both the faculty and the students.

The central library is located in the first floor of the main building, which is spread in an area of 14,167 sq ft. This building is divided into different sections like Reference Section, Periodicals, Computer, Audio-visual Section and General Reading Room.

The hospital library is an extension of the college library and it was established in the year 1997 for the benefit of clinical faculties, post Graduate students and house surgeons. The library has in its store a tremendous collection of about 15,460 volumes. Added to this the collection includes the back volumes of Periodicals, Video cassettes and 35 mm Slides etc. The collection also comprises of Medical Reference Books, Textbooks, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Technical Reports, Thesis Works and Dissertation Reports and many other books on General Reading.

Books and CD-Rom databases:
The library is subscribing for 195 journals (92 foreign, 103 Indian) of medical science that are systematically displayed in the Journal Section.

Library working hours:
Monday to Saturday: 9 am to 9.00 pm
Sunday: 9 am to 2.00 pm (One month prior to the examinations as well during the examinations the library timing is extended up to 11 pm.)

Library Services:

  • Our library is meant only for reference sake and the staff members alone can get the loan facilities for the publication purposes.
  • The bibliographies in the respective subjects are provided on request.
  • Inter-Library loan facilities are also offered. We extend our services to the other medical institutions and private practitioners on request.
  • SC/ST book bank scheme is available.
  • Full text articles are provided on request by procuring from different libraries.
  • The other facilities available are: Internet surfing, Zerox service, CD-ROM Medline Database service, Videocassettes, Thesis and Dissertation Works, Reprography and General Information Unit.

Sports

The college has many facilities like enough space for playing the games viz., cricket, football, table tennis, volley ball, hockey badminton and in addition to it athletics and indoor games are also availble. A permanent sports ground on par with National standards is also there in the campus along with a well equipped gymnasium.

Bank

A branch of State Bank of Mysore at S.S.Nagara, Mysore shares its banking services with the college, being just attached to the college building. Both the Post Office (Sub Branch) and the Telegraph Offices are in the campus.

Academic Society

The college has an academic society. All the teaching staff, Post Graduate students and interns are the members of this society. The society conducts academic meetings every fortnight where high standard academic discussions take place and interesting clinical materials are discussed.

Ethical Committee

This committee was constituted in September 1994 as per the guidelines of ICMR (an apex and statutory body of clinical research in India). This committee guides investigations / researchers in the ethical aspects of the research programmes. Funds by the Governmental agencies and publications in professional journals necessitates the project to get an approval from this committee.

Co-operative Society:

The co-operative society is also a part of the college, which supplies the needs of the students with their essential daily requirements and other requirements such as text books, note books, papers, surgical items, etc. The society works on 'no profit - no loss' basis.

Body Donation - JSS Body Donation Association:

This association was established in June 1996. The main purpose of this association is to receive the donor's bodies for corneal transplantation to the blind, research purposes, study of organs by the undergraduate, post-graduate and research students. The diagnostic procedures, new surgical technics can be studied using these bodies.

Humar Cytogenetic Laboratory

The recently established lab is well equipped and helps largely in analyzing chromosome number abnormalities in the cells. The birth defects can be detected well in advance helping in diagnosing the infertile couple. The counseling provided in right time for the suffering family members helps them in making their life style better and worth living.

Smile Trainee Program

Since March 2002, as a trial 'run', 40 children with clefts of lip and palate have been operated by Dr.Satish H.V., M.S., M.Ch., a consultant plastic surgeon. JSS Hospital offers complete rehabilitation facilities for these children. The JSS Dental College has come up with all the necessary advancements to treat the accompanying dental problems. The JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing is geared up to give speech therapy and is conducting research on various aspects of Cleft Lip and Palate. The Department of Paediatrics with its N I C U (Neonatal Intensive Care unit) is active in ensuring quality care. In addition to these many other special treatments are also provided.

Research

Research is being carried out in all departments, both in the clinical and basic sciences, under National and International funded projects. The staff and students are actively involved in Clinical and Research activities, including publication of papers in reputed professional journals. Depression Brain Bank, a unique project, has already started functioning. JSS Body Donation Association registers and receives donations of bodies.
